History
LeasePlan was founded in 1963 in Amsterdam, Holland by Anton Goudsmit and in these early days,
LeasePlan offered the leasing of equipment based on the American leasing model. After a few
years, Huib Van der Meulen with a background in the vehicle industry, joined the company.
1970
Leaseplan starts to lease vehicles.
1971
LeasePlan introduces vehicle leasing of fleets under a very specific concept: ‘the open
book system’. This revolutionary system was a success and is the foundation for LeasePlan’s
growth as a global and innovative entrepreneur company. The open book system offers customers a
fixed price per month for the car and at the end of the contract the real costs are compared
with the costs allocated in the contract. Only positive differences are paid back to the
customer, negative differences are absorbed by LeasePlan.
1972
LeasePlan becomes international with the establishment of LeasePlan in Belgium. Other
countries follow shortly after.
The owner during this period was LeasePlan Holding which changed its name to ABN AMRO Lease Holding N.V in 1993. In February 2003, the holding company changed its name to LeasePlan Corporation N.V., which still stands today.
